Danika's Vogue scholarship

We catch up with Danika to get the story behind her recent win with Vogue Australia

Congratulations on your success. Tell us a bit about how you came across this?

Thank you! I reached a pivotal moment in my life where I craved change, tired of living a routine that didn’t reflect my passions. I shifted my mindset from “what if it doesn’t work out” to “what if it does,” opening doors I never imagined. Driven by my newfound passion for design, I began teaching myself fashion and graphic design and discovered a Vogue scholarship offering 50% off tuition, mentorship, tickets to major events, and an internship. I needed to create a standout cover, so while watching a documentary on sustainability, I conceptualised a design that addressed the intersection of AI and sustainable fashion. I quickly crafted it in InDesign, submitted my work, and honestly, I was just taking a chance without expecting to win.

What was it about the Vogue scholarship program that appealed to you?

The Vogue program truly resonated with me because Vogue has been a significant part of my life for years. I've always analysed trends for my own fashion business, collecting clippings and creating mood boards throughout my home. I remember watching The Devil Wears Prada and dreaming of that lifestyle. The chance to work one-on-one with industry leaders felt like a dream come true. I had been manifesting this opportunity for so long, and when it finally presented itself, I knew I had to seize it.

How did you approach it?

I approached it by thinking outside the box, aiming to present a concept that hadn’t been seen on covers before. I wanted to address a topic that resonates with creatives worldwide—the intersection of AI and sustainability in fashion. My goal was to highlight the potential future we’re moving toward while capturing the confusion surrounding these two pressing issues. I aimed to create something thought-provoking and relevant, reflecting the current climate in the industry.

Did you have any doubts?

When doubts and fears creep in, I remind myself of the power of resilience and growth. I tell myself that challenges are opportunities for learning and that every setback is a setup for a comeback. Embracing uncertainty is a part of the journey, and it’s okay to feel vulnerable. I focus on my strengths, celebrate small victories, and remember that each day is a chance to become a better version of myself. I affirm that courage isn’t the absence of fear but the determination to move forward despite it. Every step I take, no matter how small, brings me closer to my goals.

When you submitted your application, how did you feel?

When I submitted my application, I felt a mix of pride and vulnerability. I knew I had tackled an important subject and was proud to express my passion, regardless of the outcome. Honestly, I didn’t expect to win, especially since I hadn’t yet started my design course and was relying solely on what I’d taught myself. That uncertainty scared me a bit, but ultimately, I felt a sense of accomplishment just for taking the leap.

How did you feel when you got the call to say you won?

When I got the call, I actually missed it and found a voicemail from my university announcing that I’d won the scholarship. I was in the car with a friend and went into total shock...I think I even started crying! I kept asking, “How did this happen to someone like me?” I honestly never imagined I was capable of landing an opportunity like this, so it felt completely unexpected. I’m still in disbelief! It’s a powerful reminder that you never know what doors can open if you take a chance. I’m so grateful for this experience.

What’s next for Danika?

Right now, my focus is on my studies, which remain a priority despite the win. I’m organising my move to Sydney to start my internship, and this opportunity has truly inspired me and boosted my confidence in pursuing my fashion business. Networking will play a crucial role in this next chapter, and I’m eager to see what lies ahead. I’m committed to continuous learning and am grateful to be in a country where I can acquire skills that bring me closer to my purpose.

I plan to stay focused and open to all the opportunities that come my way. Life is about to get surreal, and I want to keep the essence of what I’ve started as I move forward. While uncertainty used to hold me back, I now embrace it. I’m genuinely excited for what’s in store and beyond grateful for everything that has brought me here.
